Arnaud Kalimuendo Strikes as Nottingham Forest Earn Sentimental Win Over Malmö

“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” rang out around the ground as Forest supporters celebrated a further success against Malmö. Much has occurred since Trevor Francis’s decisive header secured the continental trophy back in the year 1979, but Forest continue to hold dear those memories. Similarly, significant shifts have taken place in the weeks since Sean Dyche assumed control, with the team appearing refreshed and earning a convincing victory thanks to goals from Kalimuendo, Yates, and Milenkovic, enhancing their hopes of advancing in the European competition.

Building Momentum with Third Consecutive Victory

For Nottingham Forest, this performance – against a Swedish side that had not played for almost three weeks after ending in sixth place in their home competition – represented a third consecutive win across all competitions and added to the positive energy gained from last weekend’s stunning victory at Anfield. While this fixture was a reminder of the club's historic success in name, the encounter itself was free of any real tension or nerves.

This was an event dripping in sentiment, an eagerly awaited reunion and the third competitive meeting between the sides since the showpiece event 46 years ago.

Forest leaned into the heritage, paying tribute to the heroes of that era by providing them, along with their visiting counterparts, the VIP welcome. Thirteen members of the Malmö's team from then were also present. The two clubs shared a dinner together prior to the match. Forest legends and company received a tumultuous welcome when they gathered on the pitch 15 minutes before kick-off, and a typically impressive display was unveiled in the home stand.

Remembering the Past

“May 30, 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left flank,” displayed one part of a giant banner, in block capitals. While no one required a reminder of what ensued, the remaining section was revealed as the players came out from the tunnel. “There is Francis,” it continued. A second stunning tifo depicted Clough observing events beside his right-hand man Taylor on a bench at the Olympiastadion.

Control from the Start

So, the hosts had drunk in those beautiful recollections, but what about the performance on the night? It was impressive, as well. They were in complete control from the moment the forward whistled an effort off target inside the opening moments and established a two-goal lead by the break. Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Zach Abbott, on his maiden European start, had a go.

It felt fitting that Yates, who came to Forest as an eight-year-old, made the first dent in the visitors' defence captained by their own homegrown captain, Jansson, previously of Leeds and Brentford FC. The Forest defender Nikola Milenkovic saw a delivery deflect off a opponent and into the path of Yates, who swept home with his right foot from the edge of the penalty area to register his first goal since last March.

Second Strike Seals Dominance

The scorer was involved in the team's next goal on the brink of the interval, too, his unmarked header saved by Malmö’s shot-stopper Ellborg but Kalimuendo poised to tap in the rebound from close range. James McAtee, the midfielder handed a seldom start and just his second appearance since September, was the spark, lofting a delicious ball towards his teammate at the far post.

A minute earlier, Callum Hudson-Odoi low effort was turned wide off the defender Rösler, the son of former Manchester City striker Uwe Rösler, and an free Milenkovic also earlier had a powerful header instinctively repelled by Ellborg, who returned in place of the former Villa goalie Robin Olsen.

Malmö’s Struggles

This was the Swedish side's first match since the domestic league ended on November 9th, and they found it hard to match the home team's intensity. The Reds extended the lead to three when Milenkovic applied the finishing touch after his centre-back partner Murillo headed back a corner. The captain had a shot stopped, but the Serbia centre-back Milenkovic pounced on the leftovers.

The home side then went for the jugular, with Hudson-Odoi chipping a right-foot shot on to the crossbar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an optimistic shot off target from distance. It was one of those nights. The manager, mindful of the upcoming league game here against Brighton, made multiple alterations from the side that surprised the Reds at their ground last weekend, when they also netted three times, though he introduced Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and Igor Jesus midway through the second half.

Smooth Evening for the Team

It proved a hiccup-free night for Nottingham Forest. The coach could withdraw the defender with the match already sewn up and subsequently brought on teenage full-back Sinclair for his first-team debut. He talked about the club legends providing “bits of gold” at regular meetings and, almost five decades on, the present squad demonstrated they are able of producing of excitement, too.
