Climate Heating in New England More Rapidly Than the Vast Majority on Earth, Study Finds.
The US region famous for its colonial history, maple syrup and frigid, snow-covered winters is experiencing a dramatic change. Fresh analysis shows that New England is warming faster than almost anywhere else on the planet.
Unprecedented Pace of Transformation
The velocity of temperature increase in New England makes it the fastest-heating region of the continental United States, as per the study. The pace of its warming has apparently increased significantly in the past five years.
"The temperature is not only increasing, it's speeding up," stated a primary researcher on the study. "It's really accelerated in the past few years, which surprised me. Our climate is moving in a different trajectory, after being largely consistent for millennia."
The analysis positions the New England region among the most rapidly heating areas in the world, alongside the Arctic and sections of Europe and China. "New England is now heading towards being like the American South," the researcher noted.
Study Methodology and Findings
For the study, researchers examined three datasets on daily temperature extremes and snow cover dating back to 1900. The review covered the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
They found that New England has heated up by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the global average, with the planet heating by approximately 1.3°C in the same period.
"That is extremely rapid heating, which is concerning," commented the researcher.
Key Warming Trends
- Minimum temperatures are rising faster than daytime temperatures.
- Winters are heating up at twice the rate of other times of year.
- The severe cold New England is known for is being diminished.
Oceanic Influences and the "Heat Battery"
A major cause for this exceptional accumulation of heat may be shifts in the Atlantic Ocean. The world's oceans are taking in more than 90% of the excess heat trapped by emissions.
In the region near New England, an increase of cold, fresh water from Arctic ice melt is slowing down the Gulf Stream. This is pushing heated ocean water into the coastal waters, congregating heat along the shoreline that is then carried further inland by wind patterns.
"The excess heat from global warming is being stored in the oceans like a huge battery," said the researcher. "This is now being released into the air and New England is a recipient of that heat."
Consequences on Culture and Weather
Once considered a relatively stable region, New England has suffered severe weather shocks in recent years, including enormous flooding and prolonged drought.
The increasing temperatures poses a threat to cherished aspects of local culture:
- Syrup production is facing challenges by changing climate conditions.
- Cold-weather activities are disrupted; an hockey tournament on frozen lakes has been called off or moved repeatedly due to a lack of ice.
- Winter tourism have struggled because of inadequate snow.
"I live just north of Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to skate on the ponds all the time," said the researcher. "That tradition has pretty much vanished from much of southern New England."
