Gas Detonation Costs Three Law Enforcement Officers While Executing Eviction Action in the Verona Area
Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and at least 15 additional individuals got wounded in an apparently deliberate detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.
Sequence of Events
The detonation occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to execute an removal notice for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.
Each of the three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri force.
Arrests and Aftermath
Two individuals got detained at the scene and a third person who ran away after the explosion was apprehended not long after. All three have been transported to medical facility.
The blast could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the area revealed the structure turned into a mass of wreckage.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to remove the three siblings in the past.
Financial Context
The leader of the Veneto area, President Zaia, said the property was facing an removal notice due to debts accrued by the property owners.
Mediators had been assigned to speak to the siblings who had locked themselves into the property. When the police came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe a family member set off the detonation.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno told the media.
“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the blast immediately struck our members,” he said.
Incendiary devices were also found at the residence, the Interior Minister confirmed.
Injuries and Destruction
The wounded by the explosion consisted of 11 other members of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.
Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a poor condition and had was without power.
He thought the explosion had taken place on a level above the access point and told reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the explosion, he said officers had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas canisters being opened”.
Neighbor Statements
“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents told reporters, noting that the three had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
